THE LIFE OF COMMON MAN HAS NO VALUE IN OUR COUNTRY. BEFORE BECOMING THE PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA, MR. NARENDRA MODI HAD ASSURED THAT THE VIP CULTURE WILL BE SCRAPPED, AND TO DISPLAY HIS INTEGRITY OF HIS ASSURANCE, HE REMOVED THE RED BEACON FROM ALL THE VIP VEHICLES, OF COURSE NOT FOR THE LONG THOUGH. AND NOW ACCORDING TO THE NEW REPORTS, EVERY VIP HAVE BEEN PROVIDED WITH MINIMUM 3 COPS WHILE 663 COMMON MAN HAVE TO SHARE ONLY SINGLE COP….

According to the reports, India remains amongst the least policed countries in the world, with one cop looking after every 663 Indian. Out of 19.26 lakh police officers in the country, 56,944 are deployed just for the safety of 20,828 VIPs. Data shows ‘VIP culture’ more prevalent in Eastern states.

According to the latest data which reveals that around 20 thousand VIPs have been provided with average 3 cops to protect them. That means around 60 thousand cops are serving only the VIPs in our country. This is a figure from around 19 lakh cops across the country, and due to this, there is a huge shortage of police force for the common man in our country.

THE REAL VIP CULTURE EXISTING IN INDIA

According to the sources, the data was compiled by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) under the home ministry shows that out of a total 19.26 lakh police officers in the country, 56,944 are deployed just for the safety of 20,828 VIPs across 29 states and six Union territories. That makes an average of 3 cops for every VIP in the country. Lakshadweep is the only state/UT where no one has been given dedicated police protection.

The major reason behind the increase in the crime is due to the less police force to handle the common man who always remains at the receiving end. India falls under the least policed countries in the world. The sources have revealed that more than threat perception, having the cops around has become the status symbol for the VIPs in our country. Despite the ban on red bacon for VIP cars, the police security has been becoming the status symbol for many.

The statewide data analysis shows that VIP culture is more prevalent in the northeast India and among this Bihar comes on number one having around 6248 cops for 3200 VIPs while the West Bengal comes on the second number that makes the full use of police force for the VIPs. The state has 4233 cops behind 2207 VIPs despite 501 cops were originally sanctioned for such duties, claims the sources.

West Bengal is followed by the Jammu & Kashmir that has 2075 VIPs protected by the 4499 cops Uttar Pradesh, whose CM Yogi Aditya Nath who has vowed to prune VIP culture, is not far behind. There are 1,901 VIPs in the state with 4,681 cops at their service. Punjab has 1,852 VIPs protected by as many as 5,315 cops.

Now coming back to the capital of India, New Delhi, that has the top dignitaries such as PM and President has only 489 VIPs but they are protected by almost 7420 cops which are justified as the state has major high-profile institutions in the country such as Parliament, Supreme Court, ministries etc run from here.

Here if you take a look at the southern states of India it has almost no VIP culture as Maharashtra, which is the financial hub of India, Mumbai, has only 961 cops to protect the 74 VIPs while Kerala has only 214 cops to protect the 57 VIPs.

Officials TOI spoke to said problems arise when MLAs, local politicians and bureaucrats/judges in states are provided police protection. “In states such as Bihar, UP, West Bengal and Punjab, it is seen as a status symbol and is encouraged by the administration,” said an officer.

What is your opinion on this VIP culture? Do you think that the allotments of the cops to VIPs justified? what about the common man, when they will get the protection? Please share your valuable comments and suggestions on this issue.
